French President Emmanuel Macron has called for a distinction between demonstrators with “legitimate demands” and people who looted, after protests over government policy, high prices and education ended in clashes and damage in several parts of France. [1]
In an address to the French people, Macron said political debate should take place “between the parties – and not in the street through violence”. He condemned what he called “unrestrained violence” and said there could be no justification for it. [1]
The demonstrations took place over the weekend. In some cities, there was looting, arson and vandalism, while protesters also clashed with police. [1]
Macron’s remarks came amid criticism of the security forces’ often forceful handling of the protests, which critics said may have contributed to the escalation. He said he had ordered “full transparency” about the forces’ strategy. [1]
