The UN secretary-general has appointed Australian Major General Nicholas James Foxall as head of mission and chief of staff of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO), which oversees the truce between Israel and its Arab neighbours.
António Guterres announced the appointment on 2 November. Foxall succeeds Swiss Major General Patrick Gauchat, whose assignment ended on 28 February 2026 after four years in the role.
Foxall has more than 32 years of national and international military experience, according to the UN. Until recently, he was director-general of military operations in the Australian Defence Force. His deployments include Iraq from 2019 to 2020, Afghanistan from 2008 to 2009, and East Timor in 1997, where he served with the UN transitional administration.
