Equatorial Guinea goalkeeper Jesús Owono will miss his country’s two Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Zimbabwe after the death of Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel, who suffered a fatal collision with him during a match on Monday.
The Equatorial Guinea football federation said Owono was in a period of deep mourning. The team hosts Zimbabwe on 12 November, with the return match four days later.
Owono said on Wednesday that these were “the most difficult days of my life”. He added that he was struggling to process what had happened and was ready to face “whatever comes” with respect, but that his thoughts were with De Miguel and the pain felt by those affected.
The 25-year-old FC Andorra goalkeeper was sent off after the collision during a match against Tenerife. De Miguel died in hospital on Tuesday. Police have opened an investigation into his death; that inquiry does not establish wrongdoing.
