Storm Boelo became the Netherlands’ first officially recorded autumn storm of 2026 on Sunday, after winds on Vlieland reached an average force of 9 for an hour, Weeronline reported. Gusts of up to 115 km/h were measured in IJmuiden.
Strong winds were expected to continue, with coastal areas and the Wadden Islands potentially still experiencing storm-force winds on Sunday afternoon, according to the weather service.
An official storm is recorded when the average wind speed at at least one KNMI weather station reaches force 9 over a full hour. Earlier in the week, storm Austen brought winds up to force 8 but did not meet that threshold.
The previous Dutch storm was Benjamin, on 23 and 24 October 2025. Five storms were recorded in the Netherlands during 2025.
