Two European women kidnapped in Niger more than 18 months ago have been released and arrived in Benghazi, Libya, Swiss and Austrian authorities say.
The women were identified as Swiss national Claudia Abbt, 69, and Austrian Eva Gretzmacher, 76. Switzerland’s foreign ministry said Abbt was met by Swiss officials in Benghazi and given medical assistance. Authorities have not released further details, citing privacy.
Swiss and Austrian officials said intensive efforts preceded the women’s release. Switzerland had set up a task force involving police and intelligence services after Abbt’s abduction.
No one has publicly claimed responsibility for the kidnappings. Abbt had lived for several years in northern Niger and is married to a Nigerien man.
