The Dutch province of South Holland has reserved €7.5 million in its budget for measures intended to limit the effects of future droughts, ANP reported. [1]
Robert Tieman, the provincial executive responsible for finance and a member of the BBB party, said investment was urgent to make the province more resilient to weather extremes. South Holland wants to tackle salinisation — rising salt levels in water — and improve water quality and availability. It is considering extra water storage and the use of treated wastewater, known as effluent. [1]
Tieman said he could not yet name specific measures: the plans are still being developed and will be presented to the Provincial States. Growers in Westland called for treated wastewater to be added to ditches this summer after a ban prevented them from taking ditch water to irrigate greenhouse crops for several weeks. [1]
