US President Donald Trump rejected the idea of a joint venture with China to develop artificial intelligence during a speech in Washington on 29 September. He argued that working together could give China access to American knowledge. Trump said someone had suggested a joint venture, but did not identify the person or describe a specific proposal. Speaking at the launch of America.gov, an AI-powered government website, Trump said the US was “leading by a lot” in AI and wanted to keep that advantage. He also said the two countries worked together in other ways. [1] [2]
His objection to joint development comes days after the US and Chinese governments announced an agreement to hold talks about AI risks and benefits. Both also said they had agreed to establish a channel for AI-related incidents. The White House said the next exchange would take place by November; China said it would be in November. [3] [4]
Trump’s claim of a large US lead depends on how AI performance is measured. Stanford’s 2026 AI Index said the gap between leading US and Chinese models had effectively closed as of March, while noting that the US still produced more top-tier models and higher-impact patents. [6]
