Ministers are weighing M4 junction closures near Newport and restarting work on a third Menai Strait crossing, but neither project is approved.
Review information is loading.
The M4 proposal covers junction 27 at High Cross and the east-facing slip roads at junction 26 at Malpas and junction 25 at Caerleon. Closures could take place by 2028, but ministers say they will first consider the effects on local roads and speak to Newport council. [1]
An ARUP review cited by the BBC estimated that the junction changes would cost £14m and reduce traffic by 3%. It also warned that poorer access for businesses and more congestion, noise and delays on other roads could limit the long-term benefit. The Welsh government plans a separate 18-month study of road options around Newport. It has ruled out the previously proposed M4 relief road route across the Gwent Levels, though the BBC reports that another motorway south of Newport could still be considered. [1]
For the Menai Strait, officials estimate that a third crossing could cost about £670m; the BBC reports that it would be at least eight to ten years before it was built. The government has rejected a three-lane tidal-flow system on the existing Britannia Bridge over safety and operational concerns, but plans improvements including wind deflectors and variable speed limits. [1]
Newport council leader Dimitri Batrouni has criticised the proposed closures, while Welsh Conservative Natasha Asghar argues they would shift congestion onto other roads. Funding for the wider plans remains unclear. [1]
