Canadian poet, essayist and translator Anne Carson has won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature, the BBC reports. The Nobel Prize committee selected her “for her bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature”, according to the BBC. [1]
Carson, 76, has translated ancient Greek literature and taught classics as a professor for more than 30 years. Her writing often crosses the boundaries between poetry, fiction and scholarship. [1]
Ingrid Carlberg, permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, said she told Carson by phone shortly before the public announcement. Carlberg said Carson was in Iceland and sounded surprised but happy. [1]
The prize carries 12 million Swedish kronor, approximately £900,000, according to the BBC. [1]
