American Brandon McNulty won the men’s road race at the world championships in Montreal after riding clear with 33km remaining, ANP reported. Australian Michael Matthews finished second, narrowly ahead of Dutch rider Mathieu van der Poel. [1]
Van der Poel had spent much of the race in the front group on the hilly city circuit, but neither he nor the other riders could follow McNulty’s move. Two-time world champion Tadej Pogačar was absent following a crash in the Vuelta the previous month. [1]
Van der Poel, the 2023 world champion and a third-place finisher in 2024, had thought the Montreal course might be too demanding for him, though he believed he could win on an exceptionally good day. [1]
