Sunday and weekend evening trading are among the proposals in a new vision for the Bristol market, alongside improvements to its upkeep.

Bristol City Council was due to discuss a new vision for St Nicholas Market on Monday, 28 September, including possible Sunday and Friday and Saturday evening opening. The extended hours are proposals, not an agreed change. The plan also envisages extra staff and security to support them. [1]
The vision includes better maintenance, cleaning, signposting and advertising, with a rooftop venue described as a longer-term ambition. The council’s document argues that current opening hours restrict traders’ income and miss busy evening and weekend periods. [1]
The discussion follows a dispute over proposed trader fee increases about a year earlier. The increases were deferred after more than 5,000 people signed a petition opposing them. [1]
Long-standing trader Lynn Hanby said she hoped a new stakeholder group would give traders a meaningful voice, while protecting businesses and the market’s character. Fellow trader Andrew Keith-Smith said he was delighted that traders’ views were being heard. [1]
