Angela Rayner says changing settlement terms for people who moved to Britain to work in care would be unfair, as ministers consider new rules.

Angela Rayner has criticised plans that could make migrant care workers wait longer to settle in the UK, putting her at odds with Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood ahead of the Labour Party conference. In an interview with The Times reported by The Telegraph, the communities secretary said changing the terms years after workers arrived would “change the goalposts” and be disruptive. She expressed concern for people who had moved to Britain to care for vulnerable residents. [1]
Foreign care workers could face a wait of up to 15 years before claiming indefinite leave to remain, rather than the five years described under current rules, The Telegraph reported. Ministers have yet to decide the final policy. [1]
Mahmood told the Commons home affairs committee that a decision would come “very soon”. She acknowledged uncertainty over which rules would apply and said ministers were weighing their responsibilities to people who came to work against those to people already living in Britain. [1]
