ADO beat Sparta in first match after Peter’s sacking

ADO Den Haag beat Sparta Rotterdam 3-1 at home on Saturday, five days after sacking head coach Robin Peter, to claim their second league win of the season. The result lifts ADO to nine points, but they remain 17th; Sparta are 11th on 12 points.

Interim coach Levi Schwiebbe took charge after Peter’s dismissal on Monday, which the club attributed to disappointing results. Peter had led ADO to promotion last season after winning the first division. Home supporters thanked him with a banner on Saturday.

ADO took the lead when Juho Kilo headed in shortly after defender Pascal Mulder left the field with a head injury following a collision with Sparta’s Shunsuke Mito. Sparta forward Milan Zonneveld then hit the post with a close-range effort.

Bas Kuipers equalised shortly after half-time, heading in from Zonneveld’s pass. A mistake by Sparta goalkeeper Michael Brouwer allowed Nigel Thomas to restore ADO’s lead. Brouwer went off injured in the 77th minute, and Daryl van Mieghem scored soon afterwards against his replacement, Filip Bednarek.

ADO’s previous league win this season had come against PSV. They remain 17th despite Saturday’s victory, having also been knocked out of the KNVB Cup by amateur side Excelsior ’31.
