Drivers in Wales face higher fines for vehicle idling under a measure intended to reduce pollution and protect health.

Drivers in Wales who leave a vehicle engine running while parked face fines of £75 to £150 from Wednesday, 30 September, up from £20. The amount depends on the circumstances: £150 is the maximum, not the fine in every case. [1]
Highway Code rule 123 prohibits leaving a parked vehicle unattended with its engine running or running an engine unnecessarily while stationary on a public road. The higher penalties follow a Senedd vote of 37 to 12, with no abstentions. The Welsh government hopes they will change drivers’ habits and reduce pollution. [1]
Wales’s chief medical officer, Professor Isabel Oliver, said air pollution contributes to heart and lung disease, with children and older people particularly vulnerable. Cardiff parent Chiara Rinaldi supported the principle behind the fines but doubted they would be enforced around school runs. [1]
