Spain has nominated former central bank governor Pablo Hernández de Cos for the European Central Bank presidency, putting him forward as a leading contender to succeed Christine Lagarde next year. Former Dutch central bank chief Klaas Knot is widely seen as his main rival.
Eurozone countries had until Friday to submit candidates. Finance ministers are due to discuss the nominations next week, but the choice will be made later.
Spain’s deputy prime minister, Carlos Cuerpo, wrote to Eurogroup president Kyriakos Pierrakakis expressing confidence that De Cos would bring to the ECB the leadership style he showed as governor of the Bank of Spain from 2018 to 2024. De Cos, 55, now heads the Bank for International Settlements in Basel.
