Amsterdam attracted more young people leaving their parents’ homes than any other Dutch municipality in 2024, figures from Statistics Netherlands (CBS) show. The city received roughly 12,800 of the more than 174,000 people aged 18 to 30 counted nationwide, including about 5,500 students. [1]
The ten largest destination municipalities together received more than 58,000 of these young people, about a third of the total. Amsterdam also led the list for students, followed by Utrecht and Groningen. Students made up 53.1% of those moving to Nijmegen, and 49.5% of those moving to Utrecht or Leiden. [1]
Nationwide, 31.5% of the young people who left home were students at the end of 2024. Nearly half of those students moved into privately rented housing. For non-students, the most common destination was an owner-occupied home, at 42.6%. [1]
The housing figures describe the homes young people moved into, not necessarily homes they bought or rented themselves: some moved in with a partner, relative or another resident. [1]
