The EU wants to expand and intensify its relationship with Syria, its foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said in Damascus on Tuesday. She proposed technical discussions this year as a step towards wider political talks. [1]
Speaking at a joint press conference with Syrian foreign minister Asaad al-Shaibani, Kallas said she had proposed discussions on political and security issues, recovery and reconstruction. She envisaged those talks preparing the way for EU–Syria political discussions before summer 2027, while saying progress would depend substantially on Syria. [1]
Kallas said the EU had lifted its economic sanctions against Syria at the end of May 2025, following the fall of the Assad government in December 2024. She said the bloc now wanted to mobilise more investment and strengthen the partnership. [1]
