A commission says clearing the Dutch prosecution service’s backlog after a 2025 hack will take considerable time, while digital security still needs work.

A commission led by Jaap Smit says the Dutch Public Prosecution Service (OM) will need considerable time to clear a backlog caused by a 2025 hack, according to Dutch news agency ANP’s account of its final report. [1]
In July 2025, the OM took all its systems off the internet after a vulnerability was exploited. The commission says that was the right decision after a warning from the National Cyber Security Centre. It also found that the OM’s security had been inadequate and that signs of weaknesses had not been followed up sufficiently. Other organisations were later found to have been affected by the vulnerability in Citrix NetScaler systems. [1]
Smit says the OM is making progress on digital security, though further improvements are needed. [1]
