Ramiz Alakbarov is due to take up the UN safety and security post in January 2027, after Unaisi Vuniwaqa’s term ends.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has appointed Ramiz Alakbarov of Azerbaijan as Assistant Secretary-General for Safety and Security in the UN Department of Safety and Security. Alakbarov is due to take up the post in January 2027, succeeding Unaisi Vuniwaqa of Fiji when her term ends in December. [1]
Since 2025, Alakbarov has served as Deputy Special Coordinator and Resident Coordinator in the Office of the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process. He is also Humanitarian Coordinator for the Occupied Palestinian Territory. [1]
He previously held resident and humanitarian coordinator roles in Ethiopia from 2023 to 2025, and in Afghanistan from 2021 to 2023, where he was also a deputy special representative for the UN mission. [1]
