The vote follows a setback for Sánchez’s housing reforms, with the BBC reporting that his Socialist party trails the People’s Party in polls.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has confirmed that Spain will hold an early general election on 29 November 2026. The announcement followed his minority Socialist government’s failure to pass housing reforms in Congress, the BBC reports. [1]
The BBC says polls put the Socialists behind the conservative People’s Party, though it gives no figures. It also reports that many expect the People’s Party to try to form a government with the far-right Vox. [1]
Announcing the election, Sánchez warned of what he called an “extreme-right wave” in other countries and said Spain should remain a global example of “peace, feminism and prosperity”. [1]
The BBC page links to a separate item about the eviction of an 87-year-old woman, but its election account does not establish that the eviction influenced Sánchez’s decision. [1]
