WhatsApp is introducing optional tools to help parents manage teenagers’ privacy and group settings without giving them access to private conversations.
Review information is loading.
The controls will let parents receive notifications when their teenager joins or leaves a group and manage privacy settings, including who can see their profile photo and who can add them to groups. Parents will also be able to choose how their teenager uses Channels and select either the default 13+ setting for Meta AI or a stricter ‘Limited Content’ option. [1]
WhatsApp says parents can change or switch off the controls. Teenagers will need a PIN set by a parent to turn them off. The company says the tools will not give parents access to messages or calls, which will remain protected by end-to-end encryption. [1]
Social media analyst Matt Navarra called the controls’ optional nature an ‘obvious weakness’ and questioned whether enough families would use them. A launch date and the countries where the tools will be available have not been specified. [1]
