Estevao Willian made his first Premier League start of the season as Chelsea beat Manchester United 2-0 at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, delivering an attacking display that could strengthen his case for a regular place.
The 19-year-old Brazilian played 86 minutes and received a standing ovation. He had six shots, created three chances, completed five dribbles and touched the ball 12 times in United’s penalty area. Two efforts went in but were ruled out for offside, the second after a marginal decision.
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso said he had told Estevao after last weekend’s defeat by Tottenham that he would start against United. “He has had the best response to show that he deserves more, that he was prepared,” Alonso said.
Estevao had been an unused substitute in Chelsea’s midweek penalty shootout defeat by Liverpool. Before Saturday, his only start this season had come against League One side Luton Town in the Carabao Cup. His limited involvement had prompted speculation in Brazil that he was unhappy or seeking a move, but the BBC reported that people at Chelsea and those close to the player had indicated there were no signs of discontent.
The BBC said Estevao’s opportunities had been limited by the form of Morgan Rogers, Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro, as well as Chelsea’s tendency to take early leads and choose defensive options from the bench. Joao Pedro was among eight players unavailable before the match against United.
Alonso used Rogers as a central forward, with Pedro Neto also taking up central positions at times. Rogers opened the scoring in the 50th minute with a solo effort; Palmer added a penalty to secure the win. Alonso said the team needed to find solutions with the players available.
Estevao’s performance came after questions about his place at Chelsea, including following his omission against Liverpool. The earlier debate over his limited role centred on competition for attacking places and Alonso’s tactical choices. His showing against United gives the manager a fresh option, while leaving open whether the winger will now earn more minutes.
