Daniil Medvedev was disqualified from Monday’s China Open men’s semi-final against Novak Djokovic after a ball he hit into the stands struck a spectator in the face, BBC Sport reports. Djokovic was serving for a place in the final when the ball ricocheted off the back of the court and Medvedev swiped it towards the crowd. [1]
Medvedev was defaulted a few minutes later. BBC Sport cites a rule barring players from hitting a ball dangerously, recklessly or with negligent disregard for the consequences. Medvedev apologised for his actions and said he hoped to apologise to the spectator in person. [1]
BBC Sport reports that Medvedev will lose all the prize money and ranking points he earned on his run to the semi-finals. He remained eighth, in the final qualifying position for November’s ATP Finals, at the time of the report; the loss of 200 points could yet affect whether he qualifies. [1]
