Romania’s parliament has approved a new pro-European government led by former diplomat and journalist Luca Niculescu, ending months of political deadlock after three prime-ministerial candidates were rejected. [1]
Niculescu, 55, is not affiliated with a political party. Addressing parliament on Tuesday, he said Romania needed “a government at full strength” after months of crisis, citing war on the country’s borders and growing threats to European security. [1]
His cabinet is set to include members of the centre-left PSD and technocrats, with support from two parties outside the coalition. The impasse began in May, when a pro-European coalition broke apart. AUR, the radical-right opposition party leading in the polls, called for fresh elections. [1]
