Reports that the spire has fallen follow a fire that reached the roof of Limoges’s historic town hall during a day of nationwide protests in France.
Review information is loading.
The spire of Limoges town hall collapsed on Saturday evening as fire spread through the building, Dutch news agency ANP reported, citing footage shared on social media. 21News said the wooden structure supporting the tower and bell turret gave way shortly after 8.30pm. [1] [2]
AFP reported that flames had reached the roof after a group attacked the town hall following a protest in the city. The fire came amid nationwide demonstrations over the cost of living. Violence and looting broke out in several cities, though AFP said the main marches were largely peaceful. [3]
The town hall opened in 1883. Its roof, façades and fountain were added to France’s supplementary register of historic monuments in 1975, according to a Limoges council record. [4] The reported collapse concerns its upper tower structure; the full extent of damage to the building remains unclear.
