The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.1% at 51,421 shortly after trading began on Wednesday, 30 September. The S&P 500 gained 0.3% to 7,694, while the Nasdaq rose 0.5% to 26,928, ANP reported. [1]
US core inflation, which excludes food and energy, rose 3% in August, below the 3.3% increase economists had expected. ANP said the lower-than-expected figure helped lift shares, alongside a slight fall in government bond yields. [1]
ANP also reported that employment at US companies rose by 90,000 in September, citing figures from payroll processor ADP. That increase was larger than economists had expected. [1]
New York shares ended Wednesday mixed, with the S&P 500 surrendering an earlier gain. The Dow Jones fell 0.9% to 50,908.79 points and the S&P 500 lost 0.3% to 7,651.96, while the Nasdaq gained 0.2% to 26,861.07, ANP reported in a dispatch published by Nieuws.nl. [2]
A US government inflation figure for August was lower than feared, ANP said. Figures from payroll processor ADP also indicated that US businesses created more jobs than economists had expected. [2]
Technology shares were among the gainers, but many other stocks declined. Investors also watched longer-term government bond yields, which ANP said had risen sharply recently. [2]
