Investigators have ruled out several possible causes of the Limburg blaze, which burned about 100 hectares of a nature reserve near Venray.

The cause of an August wildfire in the Boschhuizerbergen nature reserve, near Venray in the Netherlands, remains unknown. A report by the Limburg-Noord fire service and the national wildfire investigation team reached that conclusion, ANP reported on Thursday, 1 October. About 100 hectares of the reserve were lost, including nearly 4,000 adjoining juniper shrubs. [1]
The fire service ruled out work, unexploded wartime ordnance, discarded rubbish and sparks from a railway running through the reserve. Electric fencing in parts of the area was not close to where the fire began. [1]
The fire service believes the blaze probably started in the middle of the woodland. It said dry conditions and abundant combustible material helped the flames spread quickly, but the source of ignition remains unknown. [1]
