Nearly 1,000 people were arrested at protests across France on Saturday, according to Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez, although he said most demonstrations passed peacefully. The authorities had deployed a large police force after protests the previous week ended in serious rioting.
The latest arrests follow an earlier round of unrest in which at least 1,200 people were arrested and shops were damaged and looted. In Paris, shopkeepers began clearing up afterwards.
