Eva Geller, a 90-year-old woman shot during the attack on a Jewish event at Sydney’s Bondi Beach last December, has died in hospital, almost a year after she was wounded.
Geller was among dozens seriously injured when two gunmen opened fire on 14 December. Fifteen people were killed, including a 10-year-old girl. The attack was Australia’s deadliest mass shooting in almost three decades.
Rabbi Aron Moss of Nefesh Synagogue said Geller had been in and out of hospital since the shooting and had needed regular treatment. She was told she would never walk again, he said, but later regained the ability to walk and attended synagogue during the Jewish High Holidays.
Moss said Geller escaped the Holocaust as a child, later moved to Australia and built a family. He described her as positive and strong throughout her life.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed his condolences, saying the country would not forget those continuing to carry the pain of the attack.
New South Wales police said they were aware Geller had died and were awaiting further advice while working with the coroner’s office. Police have not provided details of any possible further charges arising from her death.
One gunman, Sajid Akram, was killed by police at the scene. His son, Naveed Akram, has been charged with 15 counts of murder, 40 of attempted murder and one count of committing a terrorist act, and remains before the courts.
