A BBC review of Thursday’s front pages finds Kemi Badenoch’s conference speech prominent, with newspapers focusing on her family-home tax pledges.
Review information is loading.
The Daily Mail highlighted Badenoch’s promises of no stamp duty, no mansion tax and no inheritance tax under the headline “Kemi’s family home pledge”. Metro focused on inheritance tax, reporting Badenoch’s claim that couples would be able to leave £1m tax-free to loved ones. The Daily Express quoted her saying that “nobody will ever pay death tax on family homes”. [1]
The papers differed in how they presented the appeal. The Independent portrayed the family-home pledge as a bid to win back voters, while the Times highlighted Badenoch’s promise that the Conservatives “will make you better off”. Those are campaign promises, not changes to tax law.
The Financial Times described her inheritance-tax pledges as invoking “core Tory values”, but led its front page with a different story, about fears of tax rises and spending cuts. [1]
