More than 15,000 homes are without power as Storm Austen brings strong winds and heavy rain to southern England and Wales, disrupting travel and bringing down trees. Further severe weather is forecast over the weekend.
Gusts of up to 84mph (135km/h) were recorded in Jersey. In southern England, fallen trees blocked roads and railway lines, while part of Brighton’s West Pier collapsed into the sea.
Storm Boelo is forecast to bring more strong winds and heavy rain on Saturday. The Met Office has issued an amber wind warning for parts of Scotland, northern England and Northern Ireland for Saturday and Sunday.
The disruption follows earlier warnings and preparations across Devon and Cornwall ahead of Austen. An earlier report on the storm’s power cuts and travel disruption covered fallen trees, transport problems and damage to the West Pier.
