A White House release assigns a $49 trillion estimate to immigration, although the report it cites puts that figure on a much broader policy package.
The White House has put a $49 trillion ten-year price tag on the immigration proposals of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). But the Council of Economic Advisers report cited in its 15 October release estimates the immigration component at $440 billion to $613 billion. Its roughly $49 trillion figure covers a much wider set of policies. [1] [2]
The release specifically says the “full suite of DSA immigration policies” would cost taxpayers $49 trillion. In the council’s report, immigration is entered at about $530 billion, the midpoint of its projected range. The report puts the net federal budget impact of the broader package at $48.90 trillion for 2027–2036, measured in 2026 dollars. Medicare for All accounts for $47.41 trillion of that total. [1] [2]
The White House had already publicised the $49 trillion estimate for DSA policies as a whole on 1 October, linking to the same report. The later release applies that figure to immigration alone. [3] [1]
The DSA’s programme does call for amnesty for immigrants regardless of status and an end to Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention and deportations. Those are DSA proposals; its programme does not establish the White House’s wider assertion that Democrats as a whole have adopted the package. The council’s figures are projections of federal budget effects if policies were implemented, not spending that has already occurred. [4] [1] [2]
