Hundreds spent the night in a central Madrid square, calling for stronger protection for renters after a widely discussed eviction.

By Sunday morning, about 100 tents stood in the square, where hundreds of people had spent the night of 26–27 September. Tens of thousands demonstrated in Madrid on Saturday, Nieuws.nl reported in an ANP/AFP dispatch. Protest organisers have urged residents to join the camp. [1]
The protest followed the eviction of Maricarmen Abascal, 87. She had lived in her Madrid flat for more than 70 years but could no longer afford the rent after a large increase. Her case has become a symbol of anger over Spain’s housing crisis. [1]
