Dustin Hoffman says filming *The Graduate* intensified his insecurities, and recounts that a repeatedly filmed slap scene left him dizzy and was followed by a perforated eardrum.

Dustin Hoffman has described filming *The Graduate* as “a terrible experience”, saying the role that transformed his career intensified his insecurities and left him feeling he did not belong on set.
In an essay for *The New Yorker*, the 89-year-old actor recalled feeling that director Mike Nichols was angry with him, either because he was doing something wrong or because Nichols had realised he had chosen the wrong person for the lead role. Hoffman said he felt “uncomfortable and unworthy” while starring in the 1967 film.
Hoffman said he had doubted his suitability for Benjamin Braddock even before auditioning. He initially did not want to try for the part, believing he was wrong for the character in Charles Webb’s novel, but his agent persuaded him to take a screen test. He was ultimately cast.
Hoffman recalled Nichols as often grumpy during filming, in contrast with his manner at rehearsals. He also said the director repeatedly urged co-star Katharine Ross to hit him harder while filming a slap scene. Hoffman said the scene was repeated 27 times; he told Ross to avoid his ear, but she missed several times. He recalled feeling dizzy by the end of the day, and said the slap was not used in the film.
Hoffman said he learned the following day that his eardrum had been perforated.
*The Graduate* follows recent graduate Benjamin Braddock as he returns to his parents’ home, becomes involved with a family acquaintance and falls for her daughter. The film received seven Oscar nominations and won best picture at the 40th Academy Awards.
