Police in Lisbon cleared a housing-protest encampment in the city centre overnight from Saturday to Sunday, with several people arrested and some injured, according to a report by ANP and Reuters carried by Nieuws.nl.
The protesters want Portugal’s government to repeal a law that makes evictions easier and to end limits on rent increases when a new tenancy agreement is signed. The report says another protest encampment was cleared on Tuesday, but does not specify where or give further details.
Portugal is among the European countries most affected by housing shortages. The Bank of Portugal estimates a shortfall of 300,000 homes. Since 2017, house prices have more than doubled and rents have nearly doubled, the report says. Young people are among those hardest hit.
