The Dutch cabinet has adopted a plan from Culture Minister Letschert to change how national cultural subsidies are awarded, the government announced on 9 October. It says the proposals focus on access to culture, simpler grant procedures and a larger role for the country’s six national cultural funds. [1]
According to the government, Letschert intends to work with municipalities and provinces to identify where cultural provision needs strengthening and how they can cooperate more closely. Its announcement says she is also working on a legal amendment that would extend the maximum subsidy term to eight years. The government says the funds could then offer both eight-year grants and shorter ones; the longer term would not apply to every recipient. [1]
The government says national cultural subsidies are currently distributed through the ministry and the six funds. It says Letschert wants the funds to take on greater responsibility, with less overlap between them, and that a person will be appointed to guide that process. According to the government’s timetable, she intends to consult cultural-sector representatives before making final decisions around summer 2027. The same timetable puts the start of the next subsidy period on 1 January 2029, with the reforms’ final shape still subject to those decisions. [1]
