The United Nations says nearly 874,000 people in Somalia could be forced from their homes over the next three months as heavy rain and rising rivers threaten communities already facing drought and repeated displacement.
The International Organization for Migration and the Danish Refugee Council estimate that flooding would account for 92 per cent of the projected displacement. Somalia is entering a rainy season forecast to bring above-normal rainfall amid strengthening El Niño conditions, the UN spokesperson said at a briefing on 22 October.
IOM is working with Somali authorities on early-warning systems and emergency preparations, but has secured only 14 per cent of the $16.6 million it says is needed to prepare for and respond to El Niño-related events, according to the briefing.
