Increased thirst, weight loss and a dull coat in an older cat may point to illness, not just ageing, Nieuws.nl reports, and says owners should consider a vet check.
Review information is loading.
Older cats that drink more, lose weight or develop a dull coat may have a health problem rather than simply be showing their age, Nieuws.nl reports. The article advises owners to arrange a veterinary check if they notice these changes.
It cites desk research by PetSecur, which draws on studies and information from organisations including the Royal Veterinary College, VetCompass, the Dutch Information Centre for Companion Animals and the World Small Animal Veterinary Association. The research is not specific to Dutch cats, the article says.
The three signs can be associated with chronic kidney disease, which is common in older cats, but they do not by themselves show that a cat has the condition. Weight loss, increased thirst and a poor coat can have other causes, too. The article also reports that about 21% of cats in the research had dental problems.
Nieuws.nl recommends contacting a vet if a cat starts drinking more, losing weight or developing a poor coat. It also includes advice on pet insurance, noting that conditions present before a policy begins may not be covered.
