The proceedings concerned the death of Liam Byrne, a 24-year-old from Stonehaven, during a wingsuit jump from Gitschen in Switzerland on 21 June 2025. BBC Scotland reports that documents it saw from the Swiss Federal Prosecutor’s Office show a decision to discontinue the case. [1]
The prosecutors’ report said it was highly probable that insufficient lift and low altitude had left Byrne unable to recover. It found no indications that criminal acts by others or a pre-existing defect in the equipment contributed to the crash. [1]
Swiss authorities said three wingsuit flyers took off from Gitschen at about 2,400 metres above sea level. Byrne crashed into a ledge at about 2,100 metres and suffered fatal injuries. [2]
