Manchester United came from two goals down to beat AS Roma 3-2 in the Champions League on Tuesday, with Matheus Cunha scoring twice late on to give manager Michael Carrick a much-needed win amid a poor run of results.
United were 2-0 behind at Old Trafford after 17 minutes. Matías Soulé opened the scoring in the 11th minute, before Donyell Malen converted a penalty for Roma. Bruno Fernandes pulled one back from the spot shortly before the hour, and Cunha levelled in the 83rd minute before scoring the winner. He was sent off in added time, but United held on.
The result offered relief for a side that had managed one win in nine Premier League matches and stood 17th, according to the match report. United’s record in the Champions League was stronger: the victory took them to six points from four matches.
The comeback came during a difficult spell for Carrick. BBC Sport reported that United had gone nine games without a win before Tuesday, leaving the manager’s position increasingly precarious. The win may ease pressure, but does not erase the team’s domestic struggles.
