Ben Affleck says the apparent commercial failure of Tom Cruise’s *Digger* should not deter studios from backing films that take creative risks.

Ben Affleck has warned that celebrating the apparent failure of *Digger* could encourage studios to make fewer risky films, leaving audiences with more of the same.
The actor and producer called the Tom Cruise film “ambitious and interesting” on his podcast. “If you punish films that dare to take a risk, you know what you get? A whole lot of rubbish films that look alike,” he said. “You can’t do anything interesting without taking a gamble.” [1]
Reports have focused in recent weeks on *Digger*’s weak opening-week takings and the prospect of heavy losses. The film, in which Cruise plays a powerful oil tycoon whose company causes an environmental disaster, has received mixed reactions. Singer Neil Young called it “the best film he’s ever seen”, while Jane Fonda, Anne Hathaway and Guillermo del Toro have also voiced support, according to Nieuws.nl. [1]
