Sonay Kartal beat Ukraine’s Anhelina Kalinina 7-5, 6-3 in one hour and 31 minutes to reach the second round of the Wuhan Open, BBC Sport reported. Kalinina was ranked 48th in the world and Kartal 170th at the time of the match, according to BBC Sport. [1]
The win continued Kartal’s return from a stress fracture in her back, BBC Sport reported. The broadcaster said that earlier in October, the British number five reached the third round in Beijing in her first WTA tournament for six months. [1]
According to BBC Sport, Kartal served four aces against Kalinina and won 23 of 30 points when her first serve landed. The report said she was due to face Swiss ninth seed Belinda Bencic next. [1]
