His family said the five-time Oscar-nominated composer died unexpectedly. His music spanned films, natural-history television and BBC news themes.
Composer George Fenton, whose work ranged from the film *Gandhi* to the natural-history series *The Blue Planet*, has died aged 76. His family said he died unexpectedly on 5 October, BBC News reported. [1]
Fenton received five Oscar nominations for his film scores. He worked with Ravi Shankar on *Gandhi*, one of his nominated scores; others included *The Remains of the Day* and *Cry Freedom*. [1]
His television work included music for *The Blue Planet*, *Planet Earth* and *Frozen Planet*, following his score for *The Trials of Life* in 1990. His work on *The Blue Planet* earned Bafta, Emmy and Ivor Novello awards. He also collaborated 18 times with director Ken Loach, including on *I, Daniel Blake* and *The Wind That Shakes the Barley*. [1]
Fenton’s music was also familiar to BBC news audiences through themes for programmes including *Newsnight* and *Breakfast Time*. He was made a CBE for services to music in 2023. [1]
