BBC Sport reported that England beat Greece 3–1 in Crete on Friday to take a two-goal lead into the second leg of their Women’s World Cup qualifying play-off. BBC Sport reported that Georgia Stanway opened the scoring and that Maya Le Tissier scored her first England goal in the 63rd minute. [1]
According to BBC Sport, Le Tissier started on her 15th England appearance after Lucy Bronze withdrew from the squad with a minor injury. BBC Sport also reported that manager Sarina Wiegman gave debuts to Erica Meg Parkinson, who came on in the 85th minute, and Grace Fisk. [1]
Greece still threatened, however. BBC Sport reported that Ioanna Papatheodorou hit the crossbar for Greece in the first half and later set up Kallisti Brouksair for Greece’s goal. BBC Sport also quoted Wiegman as saying England had played well at times but had also been “a bit sloppy”. [1]
The second leg was scheduled for Tuesday in Leicester, with kick-off at 19:30 BST. [1]
