Johannes Vermeer’s *Girl with a Pearl Earring* was rehung at the Mauritshuis in The Hague on Monday morning, 5 October, after five weeks in Japan, Nieuws.nl reports. Visitors were due to see it again from the afternoon. [1]
In Osaka, the painting appeared alongside several other Mauritshuis works in a small exhibition at the Nakanoshima Museum of Art. Princess Aiko, daughter of Japan’s Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako, opened the exhibition in August, according to the report. [1]
To mark the return, Mauritshuis director Martine Gosselink and The Hague mayor Jan van Zanen signed an unofficial document symbolically registering the girl as the city’s oldest resident. A museum spokesperson said she had ‘lived’ there since the 19th century. [1]
