Elliot Anderson has made an impressive start at Manchester City after his £116m move from Nottingham Forest, but the midfielder is still adjusting to the demands of a holding role.

Elliot Anderson has made a strong start to life at Manchester City, with his pressing, passing and ball-winning among the qualities highlighted as he adapts to a deeper midfield role after his £116m move from Nottingham Forest.
The 24-year-old has one goal and two assists in 14 appearances this season. But those numbers tell only part of the story: he has won 66 duels, made 610 successful passes and had 851 touches, ranking second, third and third respectively in the Premier League for those measures, according to BBC Sport. He has also drawn more fouls than any other player in the division, with 28.
Anderson was signed after two standout seasons at Forest, where he led the league in several measures including touches, possession won, duels contested and fouls drawn. At City, manager Enzo Maresca has asked him to operate as a holding midfielder, a position requiring more discipline than the box-to-box role he had at Forest.
“I’m loving [my role] but it’s a bit different to what I’ve been used to. I’ve got to be a bit more structured, that’s what I’m learning, to stay in my position,” Anderson said after City’s 4-1 win over Crystal Palace in August.
There are signs of the adjustment still to come. BBC Sport’s tactical analysis says Anderson can be drawn out of position when he reacts to opponents’ movement, leaving space in front of City’s defence. Sunderland, Paris St-Germain and Brighton have used runs away from him to create openings in midfield.
His energy and ability to win the ball remain valuable, particularly when City press high. He also showed his attacking range by setting up Erling Haaland’s winner against RB Leipzig on Wednesday, driving forward before crossing for the goal.
Maresca said Anderson wants to learn and improve, calling that approach a “dream” for a manager. Haaland said the midfielder had made an “amazing start” and praised how quickly he had adapted.
The early evidence points to a successful start rather than a finished product: Anderson has delivered strong underlying numbers and adapted to a demanding role, while positional discipline remains an area to develop.
