The General Assembly commissioned the expert group under resolution 79/241 to assess existing and potential nuclear-weapon-free zones and examine options for strengthening current zones or establishing new ones, including in the Middle East. The group, chaired by Maria Cecilia Barcelos Cavalcante Vieira, adopted the study unanimously on 17 July, the UN office said. [1]
The study follows deliberations in 2025 and 2026, written contributions from UN member states and two in-person consultations. The experts put forward their views without acting as government representatives or prejudicing states’ positions. [1]
