Zelenskyy hopes Democratic election win will bring more US help for Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says he hopes the Democrats’ victory in the US midterm elections will lead to more American support for Ukraine.

In an interview with German broadcaster ZDF, Zelenskyy said he was grateful to Republicans too, but that Democrats spoke clearly about helping Ukraine and renewing ties between the United States and Europe.

“There is hope that a balance of power will emerge and that we will receive more support,” he said, according to an English translation of remarks released by ZDF in German.

Zelenskyy said strong financial or military support from Congress, like that provided by Europe, would have a positive influence on Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Democrats will take control of both chambers next year; Zelenskyy was expressing a hope for more aid, rather than announcing a new commitment.

His comments follow disputes over US support, including missile warnings and satellite services. Reuters reported that Zelenskyy said last week that Starlink and its military counterpart Starshield had resumed operating at levels seen before restrictions were introduced. President Donald Trump has denied involvement in a slowdown of the service.

ZDF said the interview with presenter Jan Böhmermann would be broadcast on television on Friday, 6 November.
