Michael Carrick arrived at Manchester United’s training ground on Tuesday as uncertainty continued over whether he would remain head coach, with the club reportedly considering possible replacements ahead of Saturday’s visit to Chelsea.
No decision had been communicated by Tuesday morning, BBC Sport reported. It was unclear whether Carrick would take training. United have gone eight matches without a win under him, and work to identify a successor was understood to be continuing.
Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann feature prominently among the candidates United have explored, according to BBC Sport, and both are aware of the club’s interest. Howe, who left Newcastle in July, is open to joining United, the broadcaster reported. Newcastle would be due compensation if he joined another club, despite his resignation, BBC Sport said.
Nagelsmann is available after leaving the Germany job following the World Cup. Antonio Conte, who left Napoli in May, is also interested in returning to football, according to the report. Aston Villa manager Unai Emery is admired at United, but his contract runs until 2029, which could complicate a move.
Carrick signed a two-year deal at the end of last season after guiding United to third place in the Premier League during an interim spell. If he is dismissed, United would be seeking their eighth permanent manager or head coach since Alex Ferguson left in 2013.
