Elena Rybakina clinched the year-end WTA women’s singles number one ranking by beating Yulia Putintseva 6-2, 6-3 in the last 16 of the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo.
The victory means the Kazakhstan representative cannot be caught in the closing weeks of the season. She has won the Australian Open and US Open this year, and also claimed the Ningbo Open title last week.
Rybakina, 27, will meet Leylah Fernandez in the Tokyo quarter-finals. She beat Fernandez in the Ningbo final and is due to defend her singles title at the WTA Finals in Indian Wells from 8 to 15 November.
Rybakina first reached the top of the singles rankings after beating Zheng Qinwen in the US Open quarter-finals in September. She defeated Aryna Sabalenka in the finals of both the Australian Open and US Open.
